I believe Adnan Syed is innocent and there are three main reasons why I believe this. First Jay’s changing and inconsistent story, as well as his questionable character, second, the key unused alibi witness Asia who was never contacted to testify and third, the final piece is the DNA evidence and the two uninvestigated suspects, which I think should be prime suspects.
Jay is the state’s main witness and was once good friends with Adnan. It all started with Jay’s first interview with the police, a couple of weeks after Hae’s body was found. In the interview, Jay said Adnan told him that morning when they were going to the mall that he was going to kill Hae, and so Adnan gave Jay his phone, and car, and told Jay that Adnan would call Jay and tell Jay to meet Adnan after school. According to Jay, Adnan had gone through with it, Jay met Adnan on the highway where Adnan showed Jay Hae’s body, Jay drove Adnan’s car and Adnan drove Hae’s car around for a bit with Hae’s body in the trunk for them to finally ended up at Leakin park where Jay and Adnan buried Hae’s body in Leakin Park, as well as abandoning her car near the park. This was Jay’s story from the first interview, Jay tended to change his story each interview, some problems were linking his timeline of events to the call logs. Jay said the police called Adnan at 7:00 asking about Hae, but the phone records show calls between 6:07-6:24 by incoming unknown numbers. This is the time Adnan stated he was called by police, the calls made at 7:00-7:16 were to Jenn’s pager and two were incoming unknowns. This may not look too suspicious now, It might seem like an honest mistake by Jay which I could see happening.
If it wasn’t for future interviews in which he says he doesn’t remember what time the police called but Jay did say it was roughly between 6:15-6:30 then 6:24 which was the last call until 6:59 which was to Yasser’s cell. The 6:24 call lasted for 4 mins and 15 sec meaning that the calls Jay says happened in his second interview couldn’t have happened because they don’t appear on the phone record. Across four interviews, Jay changed his story four times and the testimony he gave at Adnan’s second trial, was an hour off in time from the phone records. Jay changed the location of where he said Adnan showed him Hae’s body, in the first interview, Jay stated that Adnan showed him the body off of the highway, and in the second interview Jay stated that he was shown the body in another part of town at the best buy parking lot. With all of Jay’s different stories and things not lining up, it makes it hard to believe that he is telling the full truth to cover up something else, therefore making Adnan seem innocent to me.
The very important alibi witness in Asia is my second reason. On the day and time that the murder was said to be taking place (January 13), Asia had claimed that she was with Adnan in the library talking with him at the exact time of the murder which was at 2:36 p.m. She had said she was waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up from the high school when she went to the library to hang out. While she was waiting she said Adnan had walked in at 2:30 and they had talked for roughly 10 minutes and in those 10 minutes Asia said they had talked about many things including Hae. Asia said that when she talked to Adnan about Hae he seemed very calm and seemed like he cared for Hae and wanted what’s best for her, that he said that he wanted her to be happy. Asia’s boyfriend picked her up at 2:40 and they left. The reason Asia says she remembers this interaction is that the following days had severe snowstorms, she said that when she heard about his conviction she attempted to contact him to be an alibi witness but strangely the letters were not brought up until later. Adnan’s defence attorney had not used Asia as an alibi witness and they didn’t contact her.
My last reason for believing Adnan is innocent is because of the DNA evidence and the uninvestigated suspects. At the crime scene detectives, found about a dozen pieces of DNA evidence but they were not tested until two years ago during the summer. When they were tested not a single one of them matched Adnan’s DNA. The only DNA they could find was Hae’s and the unknown DNA of a woman. There was no match for Jay’s DNA either, meaning the way Jay described the crime was a lie. The DNA of both Jay and Adnan would have to be scattered at least on Hae’s body from when they had buried her or from the strangulation there would be some sort of DNA on her neck or necklace linking Adnan or Jay to the crime if Jay’s story was true.
With these three reasons backing me up, my opinion is that Adnan was wrongfully treated and accused from the start and there should’ve been more evidence that Adnan was the murderer.
